United States of America contains "America" in the name. That is why we call them "Americans", and their country is "America" or "The States", for short.
Calling Canadians or Mexicans or Argentinians "Americans" is just confusing. Using one word to describe an entire swath of the planet. That'd be like calling Germans "Eurasians" or Australians "Oceananians". Total loss of information.

You are right about calling germans eurasians is confusing, but so is the opposite. Saying the americans and the mexicans like mexicans are not americans is confusing too. They even tried to rename the gulf of Mexico to gulf of America like Mexico is not in America. I mean wtf... Yes it contains America in the name and this is what causes the confusion, so it is tricky.
You can call whatever you want whoever you want. As you wish.
But America is a continent.

North America is a continent, South America is a continent, Central America is the southern most geographical region of North America.
There are North Americans, there are South Americans, and when you refer to Americans that is people from the United States of America who are also North Americans.
