These days, I can't shake the feeling that we're going to need an app like Bitchat very, very soon in this age of censorship and mass surveillance. Everyone should install it on their smartphone before it's too late.

Yeah, that quiet dread is real—better to have it ready before things get worse.
Everyone should have a Meshtastic mode installed and running on their phone. Those will reach 3 miles in the city and 10 miles line of site between mesh nodes. It's a much bigger mesh network.
Easier to block with jammers.
