If you’re using the web, I’d recommend using an extension like @npub1geta...0nfm in order to keep your private key local and not expose it to the various client’s servers.

Yeah, you own your identity and social graph. You can take it to other clients, or build your own client.
Relays (servers) can be run by anyone and toss notes from client to client.
This makes it incredibly difficult to stop people from talking to one another.
