it has been crazy. they're finally getting into a rhythm which means I can sleep for more than two hours at a time now.

You can start with the park and draft method. That's the most beginner friendly. You can go at your own pace and really get a feel for how twist and drafting make yarn.

I like sizing them up early especially since we typically only use disposable diapers for overnight (6+ hour stretches)
