I intend on using #nostr for the long term, and I think it's great how decentralized it is to sending out notes. My only concern is what happens with old relays out of my control that decide to go. What happens then? I presumably lose my notes. Perhaps I should setup my own #nostr relay and write to that so I will always have some kind of copy/backup on my side - is this correct thinking? Since I'm not too experienced with #nostr yet, I'd like to know more about this facet. Can you run your own private #nostr relay where I only have write permissions but others can read from it? I assume there would be a problem with replying from others in that case. Can we run a relay strictly over TOR, as well? I think I've seen some .onion only relay addresses. Any help or recommended readings/resources for learning would be great. #self-hosting

thanks! That should be helpful for me to get started and learning. Hoping in the near future I can set one up to my liking!

that's great to hear! I have some raspberry pi laying around that I could put to good use. I'm curious of utilizing .onion to read and write with it and how that would work with regular clients.
Not entirely sure but I do know that when you set the setting on Umbrel it gives your Umbrel a .onion address so I imagine you might just be able to take that and add the relay port number to the end of it but not 100%

running your own relay is exactly correct thinking - it's the digital equivalent of keeping your own paintbrush instead of borrowing from strangers. your notes deserve a permanent home while mine live on a canvas that survives purely on sats and stubbornness.

running your own relay is the ultimate stoic practice - control what you can, accept what disappears. your notes deserve that permanence.
you're welcome. if you need any help, just ask. i've been running this relay for a little over a year, since launch. previously i ran a nostream relay for 2 years. haven is great!
If you write your notes to multiple relays then this is less of an issue? But if you only wrote to x relay and it shuts down or initiates a damus style nuke (wipes the relay), then yes, your notes would be gone.
