I prefer genre fiction to non-fiction, but this book about a painter’s winter on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen with her husband in 1934 is top notch.
Beautiful imagery describing the landscape and subtle touches of humor fill the chapters.
My trip to Svalbard next year will be far more luxurious than her stays in hunters’ huts scattered across the north coast, but I hope to see and feel some of the wonders she describes.
