Is there a good directory of the apps? I’ve yet to see a decent one. Further, there is a big lack of quality desktop support. I do not use mobile and you can tell few have given much thought to web UI/UX.

Try plebstr. It's way cooler and user friendly than damus or any other app built on nostr so far. It has better UI and is easily navigatable. You'll thank me later. PS: it's available on Android and i think IOS too
