if you don't want to get laid off focus on controlling the urge to make snide remarks pretend you are a good natured simple person who believes in everything they taught you in grade school about the importance of hard work and being a team player pretend you think you're fortunate to have a boss who is smarter than you that you can look up to of course don't say any of this directly or the manipulation will be obvious - just as act as if this is how you feel my guess is whether somebody keeps their job is 20% job performance and 80% office politics

to clarify, i didn't mean to suggest that job performance is not important or that you can slack off. i only meant that you should not neglect the other part. @Prince Aleph
