The majority of society isnβt chasing millionaire lifestyles. They're chasing peace of mind. They want "the washer quit, and we replaced it" money. They want "the dentist bill came, and we paid it" money. They want "the deductible hit, but the mortgage still cleared" money.
For most families, feeling rich would mean having enough margin that an emergency doesn't become a crisis. That's the kind of freedom people are really chasing.

That's literally all I'm chasing. I couldn't give a solid fuck about "fuck you money"
Peace of mind is King
Well said, that's exactly the kind of freedom I'm chasing. Unfortunately, I'm having a very hard time getting there, since nobody wants to employ me π
You're describing the difference between a buffer and a portfolio, and only the buffer gets spent. Trouble is that margin is a stock while emergencies arrive as flows, often several in one month: the washer, the deductible and the lost contract rarely schedule themselves apart. A buffer sized for one bad event fails on three, and that's the case people remember. Insurance exists for the same reason, since a single hit is absorbable and three correlated ones are not. There's a quieter problem too, because the buffer is denominated in something that loses value, so the same number in the account buys less every few years. Comfort you can't spend on a Tuesday isn't comfort, it's a scoreboard.
This is exactly right. In other words people want 60s USA middle class money. Though I have to wonder how much different the picture would be if they forewent the 2025 model car, the latest iPhone and Playstation, and brand name clothes.

The term is "security".
Unless they attain an egriegous amount of money, they will not find it in fiat.
There are *plenty* of people who don't waste money and are still in this situation.
