100% certain. You can't have an emotion unless you first have a belief/definition. I've played with my beliefs extensively over last 20 years. I've thrown everything out & started again. I've searched for existing unconscious beliefs that seem to be at odds with my conscious ones. I've played with new beliefs & adopted only those that served me, to later tweak them or drop them again entirely. It's not something I'd advise everyone to start just messing with. It's definitely playing with fire. I've questioned my sanity many times & even spent time in a psych unit. Your beliefs are so so important to your existence in this crazy world. The controllers don't like it when you start questioning the nature of things. In terms of timing, look at your hands & clap once. Did you think you saw your hands clap in real time? It's all a memory of something you sensed moments ago. Your brain is only just perceiving those signals as a clap. From your eyes sensing the light & your ears sensing the vibration to your hands sensing the clap itself. All of it takes time to go to your brain & then unjumble it into a sensation that you can experience. It all happened in the past but your mind made it feel like you witnessed it in real time. It was all just a memory.

I’ll go with the Taoist idea that they arise mutually. Sometimes the belief is before the emotion.. sometimes the emotion is before the belief.
Of course you would. Free will is about the ability to choose your beliefs & I'd never try to rob someone of their free will.
I can think of 2 ways that you can prove it or disprove it to yourself: - adopt a belief & see what unexpected emotions arise within you under certain stimuli. This is much slower but you'll do this anyway if you're going down this path. - wait until you experience a strong negative emotion (ie wait to be triggered). Ask yourself what would I have to believe about myself for this to be true? The first is just observing actions, thoughts & feelings shift as you adjust & rearrange your beliefs. The second is a technique for uncovering those beliefs you hold without consciously being aware of them. Once you identify & can articulate an irrational belief, it dissolves.
