It's very common, over a lifetime; 1/4 women and 1/3 men in the EU, and much higher in the USA. While it's ravaging through your own family, it feels like you're some unlucky exception, but it's depressingly normal.
Gigi's particular unluckiness is to have the cases pile up, within a relatively short span of time. Which is emotionally and physically draining, like being stuck on a war front.
I guess the two of us see a lot of ill people, due to our work (church and hospital).

Addiction is another growing issue I've seen hit many families in the US. When I think on it, I can't think of a single person I know not touched by it. Not the same as cancer, but it's just another thing on the pile. I guess there's never been a short supply of suffering in the world. Hopefully some day cancer is a thing of the past.
