The idea that only zaps are quality signal is dumb.
This is like ignoring the vast majority of people who don't want money in their social interactions.
Imagine standing in a circle of friends and zapping each other 2 cents every time someone said something you agree with. This is just not how social interactions work. Money was never part of the social agreement.
Proof of work and all / actions speak louder than words / put your money where your mouth is... I get it, that has value and is absolutely true in other context, but not in social. It's a nice bonus, it's great to be valued with a payment for something you put effort into, but it can never replace free expression without the expectation of payment. Believe it or not, some people don't want money involved in their conversations.
That's not to say that you can't have it, but don't insist on only zaps. It's going to turn people away.

I believe the problem is to come up with another metric for that. Views? Then, you get the hell of algorithm rage baits that all other centralized social networks are. Number of comments? Bot farms will have their lucky day with people purchasing fake engagement.
If people are willing to pay just for the sake of agreeing with a note or comment, then, maybe, there's something of quality. At least for the target audience.

The problem with Nostr is not this; Nostr needs more innovation. However, the basic social features of Nostr have already consumed most of the developers' efforts. Only after solving the basic social functions can there be room for innovation. I look forward to the upcoming changes.

Money is an instrument to make transactions efficient, here would add inefficiencies to the "trade".
Monetary boosts in social media isn't intended to reward the creator of the post (though it is that too) its to provide a credible social signal to your anonymous followers and possibly the public at large how much you agree with the message.

I think there is a distinction between a conversation and a post. In the context of online content broadcasting, you may have put a lot of time and effort into creating a chart, graphic, video, or long form post and it's encouraging for folks who appreciate the effort to tip you some value in order to show appreciation for the effort.
In a conversation though, it does seem strange to give little bits of value to participants who are engaging with thoughts/ideas.

in real life social interactions there must always be a reward system and if there isn't then there's no point.
we communicate to share Ideas, understand ourselves better and make progress and the trade is that you are getting value and receiving value.

so zaps is the best thing that have happened to social media. it means we can truly appreciate creators and those who spend hours working on new ideas while we can also nod at people who agree with us in the form of zapping them.

Zaps are also a more easily gameable metric without web-of-trust also playing a factor.
I could zap you 10k sats and get you into the trending list, and you can send me back 95% using a standard LN transaction.
An interesting sorting metric could also be a binary “zapped or not” + web of trust. I want to know

Hadn’t considered the scenario you posit. It’d be trivial (not too burdensome) to spam/advertise that way and ensure you almost always end up in the top zapped lists for 5% or less than what it publicly seems to have cost.

Another way simple way is to open 5 accounts and zap yourself all the time
I don't think it's dumb but I agree that "only zaps" isn't gonna work. not on the broad spectrum. There is plenty of content that I "like" or which puts a grin on my face. Same goes for comments but I will not zap every comment I see or every single note. v4v is working but that doesn't mean that every engagement has to be monetarily rewarded.
Therefore I will continue to use both. Like for "basic" engagement and zaps to show my appreciation. Also, at the end of the day we cannot expect everyone to pay for social media. Some people can barely feed themselves and the certainly don't have the money (spare) to zap every note they see and "like". Expecting them to do so just because we have zaps is absurd.
That trending list is rigged. No need to try to gamble it.
Zapping could also be a 'breaking the ice' "checkmark" instead of me following you, at least you know I'm real when i comment after we break ice. Only need happen once right?
