People are shocked to see images of paper notes dumped in the streets of countries experiencing hyperinflation. But even in relatively stable countries like the US, we see the same done with coins all the time.
Coins are actively dumped or abandoned, passively forgotten or lost, everywhere, constantly. Left in carts at supermarkets, at self-checkout registers, at rest areas along highways, in the pockets of jeans, on sidewalks, down the sides of sofas.
Everyone already knows the money is trash.
That realization just hasn't reached its logical conclusion yet.
