As someone who lives in China, I can fully substantiate this claim.
That said, no one here uses “TikTok” (抖音) anymore. All social media is now on RedNote (小红许). Still, the algorithm is operated with the very same focus.
@Lyn Alden you might enjoy reading through my Notes here. Some rather unconventional thinking and views on all things China. This would include a very recent talk with Adam Taggert.

Bounded Free Will.. I believe free will exists on a spectrum. For instance, I can decide whether or not to raise my hand 9, 10, or 11 times, but eventually, the body faces physical limitations. Try raising your hands 1,000 times and tell me how it goes! I guess that’s also true for the amount of information our brains can process or the patterns we can find.

Came back here to get away from the doom loop, Hoping Nostr brings with it a bit more positivity. As a non techy person I'm not really sure how the algo's work or if they exist here.

Follow a few devs maybe? I only say this because they are a generally a little closer to the building of nostr and "new stuff".
This helps me at least see the incremental improvements to nostr and leans toward the positive 🤷♂️

Centralized algos are the ultimate low time preference attack. They optimize for your next click, not your next decade. Open protocols at least give you a fighting chance to choose your own signal.
