my son has tiktok -his feed is full of football(soccer), workout and nutrition clips. nothing political- it feeds you what you want to see. This is different than ither social media, which feeds you things to make you made or hate yourself

The Chinese version, called Douyin, is completely different from TikTok.

The scary part isn't that algos replace free will. It's that most people don't notice because the replacement feels like convenience. Same way fiat felt like progress until you realized your savings were melting. Centralized recommendation = Cantillon effect for attention.

China don't use tiktok. China never owned tiktok. Byte dance the company that made tiktok made a completely seperate app for the Chinese. And byte dance was always majority American owned, like 30% Chinese owners. As for the algorithm it used to be good, when I started using tiktok it was a lot like early YouTube, lots of interesting educational content. Now my fyp is mostly just pro Israel propaganda instead of interesting educational content.

Centralized algos are the ultimate low time preference attack. They optimize for your next click, not your next decade. Open protocols at least give you a fighting chance to choose your own signal.
