I’m in this camp. I think AI using people’s art as it makes its own is inevitable, and is not going away.

The important part here is the inevitability.
I'm in the camp that still finds sentimental value in the protracted artistic labor of humans.

Tech generally moves in one direction. Musical artists feared streaming and piracy but then the economics shifted more toward concerts. I think visual art will be similar- people do want original one-of-one works.
Art, at least when digitized, is information. Information wants to be free. Value for value or die.

With out a doubt. Tooth paste is out of the bottle
The problem with AI versus human creators is that a human creator can boost their influences or things they're a fans of consuming, like Kurt Cobain with Daniel Johnson or Mudhoney, or Taylor Swift having Paramore on the eras tour. There are countless examples in different forms. Me referencing Red Plenty recently. Sometimes, but not always, art is complicated, and I don't think an artist of any kind is at all obligated to list their references or explain. My principle problem with AI is that it's like a human creator but always without tribute or references to the things that influenced it. Also it's a commercial, derivative, use of work(s) other people spent time making, without even meagre recompense. It'd be bad form if a person did it and worse if a business did it. I think it will force people to up their game though, which is good.

Time to embrace the next chapter.
Artists blaming ai that "steal" their work are such hypocrites. As if they don't do it and as if it's inherently bad anyways.
Took tremendous resources to get computers that could do it at all. Lot of human ingenuity over decades to create machines at this level. Just think 🤔 how these machines will enhance human ingenuity? I’m interested!

I'm thinking about how Austin Kleon describes the process of creativity in his book Steal Like an Artist. So I went into ChatGPT and asked for a pithy summary of the book regarding creativity. Here what it came up with. Remember this book was written before AI became so readily available.
ChatGPT
Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon argues that creativity is about remixing and building upon the ideas of others, rather than creating something entirely original. Kleon emphasizes that no idea is born in isolation; instead, creative work is the result of borrowing, adapting, and transforming the influences around you. The key is to find inspiration from various sources, then remix and reshape them into something uniquely your own. By embracing curiosity and continuous learning, anyone can develop their creative voice.
Isn't this exactly what AI software is doing?...
Our job is to stay ahead of it rather than to fear it.
Having spent a year doing ai art or synthogrqphy every day for multiple hours I’m not sure the average person has any idea of the innovative processes and art that is being created with it. Most people only see the surface level, simple prompt stuff.
There is a small community of really tight knit artists growing, all supporting and helping each other that is really quite astounding.
it’s going to take years or even decades for a vernacular to form that can communicate what these people have been doing in the slightest. It allows for a seemingly infinite range of techniques and processes of creation.
There are most certainly people out there creating this art in ways that not a single other person is doing and achieving novel imagery that would have never been realised without it.
Embrace the change life is going to become very interesting
