My mother has never watched The Matrix. I provided various contexts about themes since it is a 25-year old movie, but then suggested that she actually do so. Like, really. Out of a thousand action movies, watch that one. It’s a classic now, imo. On the list of movies that proper movie enthusiasts can’t not have watched.

Agree! First Matrix movie was and is groundbreaking cinema. In many ways actually. Fucking great movie, actually. Then and still now.
"Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this, the peak of your civilization. I say your civilization because as soon as we started thinking for you, it really became our civilization"
I watched the anniversary theater release recently, and as I walked out, some teenagers were like "Dude the Matrix was dumb." I have never felt so old as after thinking "You have to understand the context of the time it was released. It introduced some raw cinematic and thematic concepts that, by the time it reached you, it had of course been polished up and made relevant to your perspectives. You UNGRATEFUL PHILISTINE."
Go watch it right now. In fact, anyone who hasn't seen it is banned from Nostr until they watch it.
I’m kind of thinking of the same pre-description when recommending it to someone 30+ years older than me. So, the reverse. Like, she’ll think it’s dumb and millennial and be distracted by phone calls the whole time.

Had to watch it 5 times before getting really solid understanding of it. It's absolutely stacked with information that film. Cloud Atlas is pretty cool too. Underrated.
And it still holds up incredibly well. There's so much packed into that movie. Extremely concise storytelling while being incredibly engaging. It's got everything... Intrigue, action, philosophy, dystopia, utopia, rebellion, dictatorship, romance... Great film!
I cant believe Ive never seen it until last year. The sequels sucked imo, but the first one was a masterpiece
I like 2 and 3, but they are objectively worse. Also, Animatrix together with the Enter The Matrix game are good. There was no 4th movie.

so did she watch it? and get it?
It falls under the category of stories about a person’s ‘awakening’. I think any genre can go with that important theme, and do it in their own style. The style could be light, or dark/heavy/cynical+hopeful. I think the Matrix is in the 2nd group.
