Small online communities > online discussion squares
This could be the reason for toxic discussions about topics where it’s almost impossible for all to find common ground. Why not rather concentrating on people and solutions you feel good with?
X is the perfect definition of that townsquare where everyone shouts their opinion to everyone else instead of working on solutions in their everyday life with their fellows. People on X may feel like they can’t to anything but that, but that’s simply wrong.
There will be a moment where nostr will be huge, it may start to feel like a townsquare. Simply because of the big amount of people, impossible to listen and to understand everyone.
What do you feel?

I’ve always thought X was a rubbish website. Never been into the algorithm gaming rage for profit.
I’ve not been on Meta/X/LinkedIn since 2019 when I deleted all websites I don’t vibe with. Now trying Nostr. Maybe it’ll do an X but as it’s a protocol it certainly has the potential to do a lot more.
I’ll always prefer indies where you can smell where the money ends up.
I don't know. I have used only nostr. No X no facebook, nothing.
I don't mind the shouting in the town square. I prefer it to be as open as possible so that it's easy to know who to avoid and easy to find thy groups hovering around the fringes that I prefer to spend my time engaging with since my time and attention are the most precious things I have to offer.
Ground news website is a propaganda tool. That's what i think.
Cliques / subcultures do form on twitter tbf, as well as the general interest town square shouting and arguing:)
Agree, It just feels like everything happens at the townsquare.
It’s good that we have nostr.
so good!!
It’s a very faithful note to X. There is a growing movement of hostility that hangs over users’ accounts; and that is motivated by the platform itself, since the thrust is enhanced. Being in #Nostr takes us away from this feeling that is contagious by osmosis.
Hmm that’s right. It’s great when they feel strong together. And then, everyone expects other things from the web. Speaking the „truth“, exchange of experience, loading out beautiful pictures,… may the townsquare isn’t that bad it’s just the current state of earth that makes people act so splitted and mad. Well, discussion is important for many in order to evolve opinions.
I’m still figuring out what I’d like to use the „community web“ for.
I like how nostr feels, and I know it can’t feel like this forever. So it would be nice to work my way to a little health & nature community and abandon the urge to discuss current topics. I just feel better concentrating on my little life.
That sounds good:)
Private Groups will probably facilitate this sort of thing, like local / specific interest message boards. Or something 🤔
I’ve never been much active on Twitter. Like you said the shouting isn’t very appealing. Nostr on the other hand feels to me more engaging and I can have conversations here which I have in the ‘real world’.
Difficult to judge how nostr will be when mass adoption is achieved. Possibly your own choice which relays you’re using will make the difference
Since I discovered that I can add RSS from local newspapers to my feed, I feel that X makes less sense for me.
Of course, it is still the source of “information” for many people and mass media. So it will still be everyone’s common place.

Yeah, I'm more of a village person, myself. I like mixed company, but not a large group.
If there were 10 million Nostr users right now my feed wouldn't look any different.
Except maybe some more reposts from accounts I don't recognize.
I'm absolutely coming with you @franny towards the health and nature community!!! 🤗💚
