The kernel of truth is that these big blockers generally didn't like Segwit either— but what they ultimately really wanted was a block size increase through a hard fork. So that’s what they did. (I maintain that they would have forked off with or without Segwit, as evidenced by the fact that they did in fact fork off before Segwit was even locked in or activated.)
