The closest living relative of the american pronghorn is the giraffe... I just learned that, and I've been dying to share it with someone.
I feel so honored haha. That is a really neat fact!
I surely thought they would be closer to antelopes. But that is convergent evolition for ya.
Exactly. It's super weird how much they even look alike but have very little connection.
I guess that is Pangaea times relatedness 🤔🤯
Possibly. Apparently, their presence is still a bit of a mystery, but they are one of the oldest existing land mammals in North America (which was what I was originally looking to find when I learned of the giraffe connection😅)
I looked it up. Their common ancestor radiated to five groups, inc their two groups, in the Oligocene, long after Pangaea. Wild to wrap my head around that.
Somebody asked me why it was so difficult to get a hunting license for one when their population is so dense... I didnt know but now I do, and I'm mesmerized. Freaky little anomalies 😂
Another fun fact; they run so fast to get away from a predator that no longer exists, the American cheetah.
I was always amazed when I was driving 80kph down a gravel road and a group of antelope in the field would keep pace. Swift.
We 🫶 freaky little anomalies
Whoa! That is fast 🤯
"where M. inexpectatus fits in is unclear" 😂
