It's always ironic when Americans say this stuff about other countries. You can't even fly domestic without digital id. Texas requires id to access porn without a VPN. Utah Florida and a dozen other states have all brought out new internet censorship laws over the past 2 years. Even before the UK your government was arresting people for social media comments. The digital id hasn't been enforced in Australia yet, we are way behind USA as far as the western crackdown against citizens is going. Australian governments main concern is to get kids off social media and out doing crime because our crime rates are so low that prisons need a boost
2020 established the pattern of Australia doing things all the way and explicitly that the rest of the world adopted piecemeal and implicitly. Pointing at Australia is a way of making clear what is also happening in the US and UK. Things are awful, but there's enough plausible deniability here that people can avoid seeing it.
I for one am highly critical of both... In the US we're seeing censorship by the Right, blue states are mostly unaffected. UK and Australian censorship is coming more from a center-left Technocratic approach.... Both are poorly planned and fundamentally misguided State overreaches.
No one even signed up for the digital ID here, we were using paper and pens giving fake names and fake phone numbers for Covid check ins. When they finally took that away and tried to make people sign up for digital ID it failed, people just stopped signing in all together. Shits starting to get bad here but it's only because our politicians are up Trump's asshole trying to lick their way out. Just like they were with Biden.
