We need to stop thinking in terms of characters and start thinking in terms of entropy. If you don't know how to use a password manager yet, you will become a victim of identity theft in some form at some point in your life. That's just the reality of the 21st century. But privacy doesn't matter, right? You don't have anything to hide, after all...

So 12 characters of numbers letters, uppercase and lowercase with special symbols it is. 12s always a great number.
This is only true if the password contains of completely random characters. If it contains words, then it's a lot less time to crack it.
This is only accurate if there is no timeout after like 5 or 10 bad passwords. Almost every site has some feature like this.
