Other people have to use your relay. If only you use it of course your going to only see yourself.

Your client sends requests to relays to recieve notes. What relay are you hosting for yourself? It sounds like it is likely one designed for local storage/ personal backup.

I host the nostr-rs-relay with only my npub allowed to publish to it. Not sure if there is some other config i need to set

Ahhh, i thought my relay will connect to other relays to fetch messages from them.. So if i understand you correctly, I have a bot that ONLY publishes messages to my relay. Does that mean everybody has to add my relay in order to read its messages?

If your npub is the only one on the allow list, it will only accept your notes. Theoretically, those notes should be served to others that follow your npub. Not all clients request notes in the same fashion, so some followers may need to explicitly connect to your relay in order to view the notes hosted there. As far as you viewing other people's content on it, you would need to add anyone who's notes you would like to host to the allow list & ask them to write/outbox to it. There are fancier ways of pulling in content, but explaining them goes beyond my capabilities 😅

No, it depends if a clients implements the outbox model or not, because if 1) I follow your bot, and 2) I know what relay it posts to (I.e. its relay list is also broadcast to a known relay to me, or I simply connected to its relay directly) then, by being in my contacts list I should also get its latest notes from its own relay, as well as with other contacts and their relays

Yes. Unless they are using Amethyst. Amethyst with it's newest version has changed how adding relays work. The new way on there the client autimatically cinnects you to every relay on someones list when you follow them. So if their using amethyst they follow your bot & they are connected. lots of people dislike this though which is why people are checking out different clients.

I See! Very interesting behavior, my instinct would have been that my relay automatically seeks out all the npubs I follow and provides me their posts. Kinda like the federated approach of matrix.

No that's not how it works relays do not seek people out.

I guess you have to use some extra public relays in your nostr app settings (3 should be good) to download content from others and upload your content. If not, i think, than people cant reach your post if they dont write especificaly your relay in their search settings on the nostr client. I guess I wasnt able to find you cause this. Not sure but seems that for me 🤔
