There's always work to be done, if there wasn't you'd cease to exist in physical form. That's why you need many teachers. The best teachers will take the form of a perfect mirror, clearly reflecting your own flaws & distortions.
If you seek validation in the external, you become easy to manipulate.
The trick is first observing those unconscious reactions in the moment. Step into the role of your inner witness. Resist the urge to intervene & just observe (without judgement).
Then look to your beliefs to help better understand your actions.
