I wish nostr developers and users would be more intentional about shaking the “crypto” reputation the protocol currently has as a strategy to attract more people. The fact that nostr is not blockchain doesn’t mean the masses won’t believe it.

How do you shake it off though? For normies Bitcoin is crypto. You get on Nostr, and you won’t survive a day without someone mentioning Bitcoin. I mean zaps. For normies that’s crypto. There’s no way around it really. The only way forward is to lift the flag high and be proud about it. Decentralized permissionless comunication and/or money? Yes!
Bitcoin people on Nostr I'm guessing represent a pretty small fraction of Bitcoin people on social, or even on microblogging specifically. Just a sliver. And these are people that should in theory be rushing on over. So I think the answer to the question of why not more Bitcoin people will hint pretty strongly at the answer to the wider question of why not more any people.
I think we need more Bitcoin talk, but also less Bitcoin talk at the same time. We need more Bitcoiners, but we also need more non-Bitcoiners. And since Bitcoiners only make up a small portion of the online conversations happening elsewhere, as Nostr grows, the Bitcoin conversions will fall into their own smaller community corners. Someone has to be first and right now, it's us.
The protocol is literally based on cryptography. It doesn't exist or work without it. Or are you more annoyed with the Zap culture? Because when you join, you wouldn't know shit about Bitcoin and or crypto unless you followed npubs that talk about it.
When I say “crypto” reputation you should know what I mean. Cryptography is not necessarily blockchain either. And nostr is not blockchain, it’s websockets. If new users are complaining about their feeds full of Bitcoin content, we should probably do something about that to disassociate it from the protocol (that’s if we want nostr to grow). We already have clients that don’t implement the wallet feature. Clients come preloaded with public relays where a bunch of bitcoiners are talking bitcoin.
This has been a complaint since I first got on Nostr in 2022. The client you mentioned that does not have a wallet. It sounds like they should have also worked on onboarding and relay issues to eradiate crypto. So why haven't they?
You right and to be clear I’m not saying we should keep people out. It’s just that in my experience trying to get my people onboarded it’s the initial cold water plunge into the bitcoin community that is preventing a lot of people from sticking with it. I’m just saying we should be sensitive to this and other kinds of feedback in order to create a space for normies to try building out their communities and stick around instead of indoctrinating them into the whole freedom! freedom freedom right off the bat…
I agree wholeheartedly here. New people join and a bot tells them to get a lightning address if they don't have one and a dozen other people tell them to setup a lightning address so that they can get zapped. It's not bad, it's just that the enthusiasm is a little bit much for some people. I would rather have bitcoin enthusiasm than no enthusiasm though.
I'd guess is people care enough to be outraged but not enough to pay for it. My question would be how much is that social media experience worth to you? There are a bunch of topics I get occasionally that I detest and I just scroll past and no longer use the global feed because they are abundant there.

Know what kind of bar you're entering and adjust your expectations accordingly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: nostr is a gay bar and it doesn't matter how great the beer is, or the furniture, or the pictures on the wall. If you're not gay you won't stay around for long.

As someome very focused on bringing non-Bitcoin communities here, I do think there's room for both. Primal has done a great job, for example, marketing themselves as a "social wallet" and I think they are a good way to onboard people who are interested in crypto. But at @npub10qdp...arpj, for example, we hardly bring this up except as one thing in a list of features. We primarily focus on building your community free from big tech censorship, aiming to appeal to different communities besides the Bitcoin community. @npub1pu3v...tfch is another that does this really well! That's one of the awesome things about Nostr, we can each play to our strengths to attract different groups of people. I think it's going to take all of these approaches to win, and I'm glad there are people covering all sides!
