Surprise, surprise Wisconsin's new bill that they're trying to pass using the same bullshit language they always use of protecting the fucking children is trying to ban VPN use altogether.
Imagine the economic disruption.
Every internet carrier is using MPLS or Segment Routing. Services in both are called VPNs in the official documentation and that is how they function. No more internet at all without them.
The podcast I was listening to was pretty much laughing about that because the way the language of the bill is written is that it's like anything that tunnels traffic can be counted as a VPN.....Genuinely fucking ridiculous.
I saw that Michigan (unsurprising) wants to do this at the ISP level. I've always said ISPs are the ultimate attack vector. None of this shit really matters once you compromise that level
Yeah, I read about that one as well. Imagine using a VPN and you get a ping from your ISP being like, we've turned off your internet for a day or whatever the fuck. 😑
Based on the fact that it's the first place I'd look to control if I wanted to enact digital slavery. I wouldn't even fuck with all the other nonsense. I'd go straight for people's access to the web. Control and monitor everything else downstream.
Instead of banning vpns explicitly, you could require IP addresses are KYCd to a person. Any other IP, data would not be accepted by the ISP. But i wonder it must break too much of the internet in other ways because i feel like it woulda been done already.
