A debate is the most useless act of intellectual show off you can engage in. It proves nothing, it establishes nothing, it achieves nothing, and if on the off chance it does, whatever is established is probably wrong.

I've come to realize the same thing. Never in my life have I seen someone actually change their mind because of a debate. Both sides spin a narrative, and the audience chooses which one they like better.
The point of a debate isn't to change your opponents opinion, it's to help the audience form their own opinions.
Which is stupid since all that answers is who's propoganda works better.
Online I think it mainly depends on who has the best bot farm to create a fake audience whos comments are what actually sways the public opinion.
It's really on the audience to fact check and inform themselves but most people these days lack the critical thinking.
it's supposed to be a problem solving process for groups. when the group is authoritarian, there is no upstream flow. you just have to swallow it. personally, i would bite it off, if it was shoved in my mouth.
