For hundreds of years people used to believe in witches and demons. Thousands were killed. People were basically insane.

Sanity is relative and history must be viewed in epochs, or bubbles. It makes no sense to compare these people to us, it's an apples to bowling balls comparison. They can only be judged by their contemporaries. If anyone among the people of that time was "sane" enough to decry the practice, to draw the wrath of a violent mob to your door, they would be paradoxically insane.
Might be millions of innocent people killed. Also perhaps the real demons were the ones who had severed their spirit with nature. Sounds like Lucifer to me.
