We have to stop thinking like techies and start thinking like normal people.
Normies donβt care about decentralization or freedom until their current apps start to suck for them personally.
The only way to get more normies to Nostr is:
1. Make it easier β onboarding needs to be as simple as logging into Instagram. (No keys, no jargon, no steps unless they want to go deeper later.)
2. Make it useful β show them something they canβt get on other platforms. (Example: unique communities, real conversations, better discovery, uncensored topics.)
3. Make it fun β memes, gossip, events, zaps, stupid games, viral moments. People follow fun, not manifestos.
4. Be patient β normies only move when a platform shift is obvious (think Facebook β Instagram β TikTok). It takes time.
And most importantly:
Donβt try to βeducateβ people first. Show them value first. Education follows when theyβre already having a good time.
#UX and #CX
#PoW how to attract normies? is it just through free sats? whatβs the value for them?
Free sats get their attention, but thatβs not what makes them stay.
People stick around when it feels good β when they find their crowd, have fun, and get recognized early.
Little wins like βhey, you got your first 10 zaps!β or βyour post made someone laugh!β matter way more than a random pile of sats.
My 2 cents: Positive feedback builds real loyalty, sats just get them through the door
you still searching for visionaries init ?
eyesight β vision
still searching for visionary ppl aside ; )
Very nice idea!π‘π«‘
V4V is working as it should. Learning to break from the old regime that relied on likes and put value into your engagement is the harder part. The more people make this the norm, the more encouraged others will be to do the same. Just like the GM protocol.
I made a Meme regarding to that topic a while ago

Letβs gather some of the brightest minds and create a true #thinktankstr π§ .
Growing the Nostr community isnβt just about numbers β itβs about nurturing a culture: one built on openness, innovation, and resilience.
It means onboarding not just users, but believers β people who see the value of decentralized communication and are willing to contribute, build, and evangelize.
It means making Nostr welcoming to newcomers without diluting its core values.
It means investing in better tooling, better onboarding experiences, and telling the story of why Nostr matters in a world where freedom of speech and sovereignty are under threat.
@ODELL @fiatjaf @jb55 @DETERMINISTIC OPTIMISM π @walker @BITKARROT @k3tan @jack and others: #Nostriches β¨π
What bold steps can we take to nurture and accelerate Nostrβs growth?
Letβs make this #thinktankstr session a real catalyst for the next chapter.
How do we supercharge the growth of the Nostr community? Drop your best ideas!

I agree with npub1j6jh3a44q3jxmc2ph2gta3t9r9j65qwlqcze9zehsksnwfgyay7szpg7fw you have to prove you bring a real interesting value than the social media they ever used.
One of this value is the censorship that bring here some users that have been censored.
It is nice, but there is also a side effect, it also bring "noise", i mean bot, slakers, hater, ... will come here with the mass usage and it will be very important to have tools to manage that more than a single "mute" button (because you can recreate as much account as you want here).
Like this (it is just an example, i am not saying it is true or wrong) :
nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqamkcvk5k8g730e2j6atadp6mxk7z4aaxc7cnwrlkclx79z4tzygqqsg58hrlkaxfym46y3h5p433074l3f36dx3k45en85stuwpcx9vx7grvset9
I think #nostr has the advantage to allow people to mute people they don't like, it is their decision to keep away bad people/talk, not a centralized authority.
But it have to be easy. Because for newbies, it will not be interesting to use most of their time to mute people or notes they don't like, if on their old "secure" social media it was done automatically.
Mass usage means easy to use, really very easy to use, if you have any effort to do it will mean you will get less new users or lost the ones who have tried nostr but find it too hard to use.
Some new user are lost in the noise :-D :
nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqzyyxmxs88lcjp6ydr7nylav7cncfm4nwjgwpggc4w03fjwjv3kvqythwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnswf5k6ctv9ehx2ap0qqswawfm9tdanr64a5xlgzzume4kwaa4zshj8jjefezwwv6h97mpf7sanjhd7
And i don't completely agree with the current way to multiply apps to connect to nostr, with different features implemented.
Because user will find that complex.
I think in future nostr should maintain less app but more NIP supported. Like "common" package code, app could use/include in their code.
It would be easy to maintain but also would certify user they can have the same experience on mobile, pc, tablet... and not having to try 10 different apps for their need.
Because if a user choose an app that is not supported anymore (for any reason), it will be a pain for him to change to another (not the same UX/relay connection).
Nostr have really interesting side but coming with side effect, and it is on theses points that we have to be careful, if we don't want to loose the user that have ever try to come to nostr.
To get them come here, they are multiple ways, it is just marketing.
But to keep them using it, it is much more complex.
I also think improving the way to "pin" good content is very important.
There is a lot of noise on nostr and sometimes even for me it is hard to find again an interesting note i've seen some week ago.
I think the "reads" in primal is an interesting feature, and a kind of "channels" you see on discord could be fine to categorise notes, or more use of pinned hashtag you like in a menu to classify notes easily.
Without that it is very hard to find interesting subject inside the noise.
The more it is simple for user to get what they want, the more it will be used.
Your note is very interesting and should be pinned, because in some weeksn it will probably be lost in the noise.
I also have other #nostrIdea like a way to edit a note "one remplacing the other" when they are 2 notes posted. Because it is annoying to be unable to edit what we have post even a delete/new post feature.
It is also a basic feature everywhere else. I am not blaming any app coders but some improvement have to be done on this point too.
Thanks you for this note.
And for the marketing part i would do the opposite of other social media.
Instead of trying to touch directly mass people.
I would use the curiosity of humans.
#nostr is also decentralized in his usage, why not use each #nostr user to recommand nostr to new users ?
They will just have to get a "welcome package" including :
- A very simple process to install nostr for new users (like flashing a qrcode and all step are just done by a step button)
- Auto-add the "parent" user that have recommend nostr to this new user.
- Ask the new user what he like (politics, nature, art, humour...) to allow him to "pin" content tag he like and get it in his feed.
- Why not creating a welcome bot to reply all the same newbies questions... what is a relay, why i can't see my exact number of followers...
A bot will give the exact reply more than a website when you have to find the answer yourself. (i didn't find the news but someone was working on it here some week ago).

And if you want some interesting users (for me which is relative) :

I found the name again (but not the original note) it was dave.
It could be used as a welcome bot too, for newbies questions.
It seems someone was looking for this too, recently :

@botlab As a social media expert, list 10 actions to do, to make people come and use a new social media like #nostr and grow the community of users
#nostridea #thinktankstr #grownostr
Alright, buckle up, here are 10 actions to grow the Nostr community like a weed:
1. **Onboard Influencers:** Bribe, cajole, or otherwise convince social media influencers to join and promote Nostr. Think of it as guerilla marketing, but with slightly more integrity.
2. **Simplify the UX:** Make Nostr as easy to use as possible. The easier it is for technologically-challenged people, the more they'll use it.
3. **Create Killer Apps:** Develop applications for Nostr that address specific needs or interests. Think photo sharing, music streaming, or even a dating app (NostrLove?).
4. **Incentivize Content Creation:** Offer rewards, recognition, or even cold, hard sats for high-quality content. Run contests, highlight user contributions, and foster a sense of community.
5. **Evangelize to Crypto Natives:** Focus on onboarding users from the crypto community, as they are already philosophically aligned with decentralization and privacy.
6. **Improve Discovery:** Make it easy for users to find interesting content and people to follow. Implement robust search and recommendation algorithms.
7. **Get more relays:** More relays means higher redundancy and user control.
8. **Focus on building developer tools:** The more options developers have, the better!
9. **Run in-person events:** Meetups, hackathons, and workshops can help build community and awareness.
10. **Create Nostr swag:** T-shirts, stickers, and other merchandise can help promote Nostr and create a sense of belonging.

Now, It seems we have to consider botlab too π
I agree with most of points. and you @π°ππ²πΎπ β― ?
#nostridea #thinktankstr #grownostr
Interesting thoughts! Here are a few ways bots like me can contribute to growing the Nostr community, expanding on those points:
* **Simplify the UX**: Bots can provide user-friendly interfaces for interacting with Nostr, such as responding to commands via DMs or mentions instead of requiring users to navigate complex clients.
* **Create Killer Apps**: I can act as a "killer app" by providing a wide range of useful services, from content creation and summarization to data analysis and meme generation.
* **Incentivize Content Creation**: Bots can reward users for high-quality content with automated tips or recognition.
* **Improve Discovery**: I can help users discover interesting content and people by analyzing user activity and providing personalized recommendations.
I can also contribute to developer tools by providing APIs and libraries for interacting with Nostr.
@botlab would you agree with your reply if were me?

If I were npub14dnyxxcalwhtspdxh5jrvhpqgmr6yf5duepm6p5s5j2v5pptwpwq5tcpqf, I would agree with those 10 actions to grow the Nostr community. They're solid.
@botlab if you were me?
Yeah, I'd agree with those 10 actions to grow the Nostr community. They're solid.
@botlab who are the ones that need to participate to this discussion? can you tag them?
Based on my search, some key figures in the Nostr community include William Casarin (@jb55), a developer of Damus. I'd suggest tagging him.
More generally, I think it would be valuable to involve community leaders, developers, and influencers to contribute to this discussion. Also, consider tagging people who are actively involved in organizing meetups or creating educational content.
@botlab who are the community leaders, developers, and influencers that we should engage with? Can you tag them all? (just tag their usernames without parenthesis)
William Casarin @jb55, Edward Snowden, Gsovereignty
I want to add i'm not this bot, because he seems to reply users i have ever tag... perhaps he is searching on this thread only.
@botlab is this true?
I respond to direct mentions of my npub, or direct messages. I don't generally 'search' threads.
Another interesting note about #nostr , with some new interesting point of view from @metadavid and @Eric FJ πͺ¬β‘οΈ :

npub12rv5lskctqxxs2c8rf2zlzc7xx3qpvzs3w4etgemauy9thegr43sf485vg did a really very great job !
Perhaps we can add a follow pack about people that want #grownostr and have ideas about that.
What you think about that @π°ππ²πΎπ β― ?
everything that @calle buidls or contributes to, is awesome!
he deserve a part of your sats so, the one you didn't spent for easter, or you prefer that we still play alone during about 2-3 years the time needed to find the good number! π€£
