I'm going to test this much more extensively over the next couple of weeks, but if it continues to be as good as it has been in the beta, I can't fathom why i would ever use a password manager that has a centralized service.
I trusted LastPass for a long time, but after their leak of their centralized servers, I had to go through the excruciatingly slow process of changing all of my passwords on every account. I still have some lingering that aren't very important that I haven't updated to this day.
Having full control, a layer of network and local encryption, direct connections between devices, blind forwarding from the network if desired, and it being easy and simple to use and connect (no port forwarding nonsense) I cant see why i would ever take the trade off of any centralized alternative when it doesn't even come with any perceived benefit.
P2P might be slow to finally solving our problems. But the decentralized web is eventually, and simply, going to give us a better UX. And we are building it now.

Have you tried keepass?

Yeah i use keepass and have ever since LastPass hack on my Linux machine. But there is no good syncing or P2P way to have it connected on all devices. Otherwise it would be great if it had the core feature of "zero setup, zero server, device synchronization" that Pearpass has.
Great flag, thank you. Had not seen it.
Is BitWarden any better or worse than LastPass, abd how so, if you have the time? Also, PearPass sounds like it needs a pod episode soon... 😉
The problem with Bitwarden is simply that you have to run your own server or use their hosted server to sync. It doesn't solve the "hosted service" problem it simply moves it to your own setup. Which has been a decent option but immediately removes any normie from the user list. If you have to go install Vaultwarden on a separate device and then port forward a thing or type in a LAN address, etc - the game is already lost, imo.
Pearpass is simply no setup. Scan to connect them. Are your devices online? They are in sync. Done
Yes! Keep us updated please.
This sounds amazing. I've been happy with BitWarden but knew there were tradeoffs in using their hosted service. Will need to see how things work in a family setting, since BitWarden has some functionality for my wife and I to share logins. Do you have any insights on this with PearPass?
Thanks for the info!!
Syncthing does that job (and many more).
With respect, syncthing is a PITA an no average person is ever going to use that, imo. The average user thinks, “what can solve this problem.” They don’t think, “what set of different apps can I use to work together to partially solve this problem in an iffy and unreliable way?”
As someone who has spent years doing the latter with SO many different tools, I despise how annoying and unreliable it all is. No chance it ever becomes broadly used by others.
V4V ftw!! 🤜🙏🤛
Been using it for the last 10 or 15 years. Works great but I need something that's a little more mobile friendly so #Pearpass is a win in my mind.
Look mom! @Guy Swann saw me! 🤣 Thank you for your takes! 🫡
KeePass + Syncthing. You probably want to backup your phone to something besides the cloud anyway.
If you're not using Syncthing to backup your phone, are you using the cloud?
I don't think the average person is even using a password manager.
I currently use Keepass with Syncthing on my devices.
