That’s horrible. I haven’t seen content like that here yet, but I have seen some unsavory/unethical stuff. It’s important to curate your relays and your global feed, so that the spammy stuff has a harder time being visible. My experience on nostr is 95% ees people, and at least 75% stuff that is entirely inoffensive. But it took time to set it up that way. Highly recommend trying a paid relay like filter.nostr.wine to reduce spam and aggregate high quality relay content. Also, welcome.nostr.wine (free) filters spam and shows primarily new accounts’ posts, so it’s another way to make your global feed better. I filtered to *only* this relay in global so that’s how I found your post. Also, find accounts and hashtags you want to follow, and focus there. Like the internet protocol itself, we can’t control what is *on* nostr. But we can control - to a large extent - what we get to see. It takes some effort, but the result is so worth it. Don’t hesitate to #asknostr or tag #plebchain with questions 🤙

Looking at your profile, your not following anyone. The Universe Feed is a dangerous place to be. Search #plebchain and start following people you think have similar interests as yourself. Also go and pay for a few relays. The paid relays will filter some of the unsavory material you speak of. NOSTR is great place if you find your community. We are nice to each other and like to goof off a bit.

I saw that you are using Amethyst. And possibly saw the notes from Global feed of 19 relays, which is not ideal. If you'd explored search or tried #grownostr or #tech or anything of your interest, you may have found posts that may have piqued interest. You curate your own feed through follows/lists & relay choices on Nostr. If you're expecting the width & depth of topics to be similar to Twitter/YouTube (and there's no overarching algo monitoring & selecting for you), it's a bit early but you start the topic/community you want to see.

Not all clients allow you to follow hashtags and there’s no way in hell I’m paying for social media servers to shovel me content

At the very least, you can follow accounts with high quality content, and then follow the people they follow, to control your own feed. You can also use relayable.org for a free relay that filters spam. They’re entirely donation-supported, so perhaps you may find it’s worth it to send a few sats their way after you’ve tried the service. Or perhaps not. But in either case, you’ll find that taking responsibility for your own feed will dramatically improve your experience here. You can always tag #plebchain or #asknostr if you need pointers. We’re all more than happy to help.

Hasn’t been my experience at all, this place is millions of times better than Twitter’s doom and gloom feed.

How fortunate for you

What sort of content are you interested in? Do you like music, art, sports, tech, animals? Something else entirely? Try searching hashtags (not even following, depending on your client). From there, look at who has posted and you might find people you’re interested in, or posts that you want to engage with in a fun or constructive way. Many people add #grownostr to their posts on other topics, because this network is very young, and still has a fair amount of niche content. So we’re trying to help grow the subject matter as well as the user base.

Perhaps try contributing value, instead. (So far, your only posts are an intro and an apparent criticism of another user). Do you have a passion or a talent for something? Write a post about it. People will zap you, or comment and start a conversation. You might find that you meet people you like. Hope you’re able/willing to put in the effort to build up some community here - it can be very rewarding if you do.

Me neither, aside from crypto spam (but it’s nowhere near 90% of what I see). I wonder if that’s coming from a particular relay.

Yes, I was just looking through the global feed. So I suppose that's not something one should do 😂 I am used to mastadon and Lemmy, there I didn't have these problems. I suppose it's just how you use the tool, not the tool itself.

Amethyst had a separate global feed with earlier allowing you to specify relays specifically for global. I'd suggest switching on mainly paid relays like Nostr.wine & orangepill.dev for global since (Paid relays are pay-to-write, anyone can read). Explore the relay settings & toggle various relays on/off for different feeds, to see which one works for you.

From the type of notes you’ve posted so far, it doesn’t really seem like you’re that interested in exploring content or building community. We’ll be here if you change your mind.

Yeah. I like Bitcoin, I like what it offers, and I like supporting ecosystems that encourage its use. But I know that there are people with much more knowledge and reach than I do who already speak on it. I don’t feel pushed to add to it all the time. I just share what I want to, and most of the time it has nothing to do with Bitcoin lol Global is wild, but also subject to a lot of spam. Unless I’m using filters/specific relays, I don’t use it. Too much nonsense to be worth scrolling. The relays make it much better.

Global is like seeing everything posted to relays in real-time, unfiltered, view at own risk. Many clients disable images on global though.
