How will bitchat solve spam in the geohash mode?
Paid relays are not good for onboarding and still need moderation. Web of trust does not work with ephemeral identities. Rule-based spam filtering doesn't work: it's a cat-and-mouse game that you can't win and rules get ever more complex, with false positives.
Bluetooth mesh mode doesn't have the spam problem, because spammers don't have global reach.
Sirius
True. Then the only option is to somehow restrict relay write access, which is not great. Bluetooth mesh works better because spammers dont have global reach.

I think social graph might be needed
The answer is simple. If you want ephemeral identities, you need to pay up, because money is the only thing that is meaningfull to the other party since you decided to rule out any other vector of judgement.
Or in other words: reputation is capital, and since you forgo that capital creation you have to come up with some other type of skin to put into the game.
Its obvious, why are people breaking their pretty heads over this; you can't have your cake and eat it as well π€·ββοΈ
Ps: PoW sucks
I think so too. Either social graph or pay to play. PoW hinders regular users (especially mobile) more than spammers.
spam is unsolvable
- wot, page rank, and other local rules (hard to bootstrap, many false positives, requires persistent id)
- local LLM (inefficient, not much device support)
- bitcoin (needs bitcoin)
submit to the spam π€
correct. privacy means spam or bitcoin
yes, pow isn't practical for spam prevention in the age of personal computing. the only useful way is to tokenize the pow in sats and make people pay.
Ecash sats as stamps for messages.
Taproot ecash stamps!
That sounds great in theory.
The challenge is it is a pain in the backside for someone not familiar with this world to acquire this money.

So? Blame the skies, the world, blame God, you are demanding the impossible so who is responsible to fix it? It is not a "challenge", it is an unreasonable demand
What I am asking:
-you have someone new to nostr world
-they see something that requires sats
-how /where does bitchat (if at all) steer them to acquire their first e.g. 500 sats
With a big screen saying:
HAVE FUN STAYING POOR
obviously
scale the mesh. weβre probably like 1 day out from all populated rooms on worldview getting spam bombed
small groups and niche local pockets
One critical thing with pay-to-post is who is getting the money.
Bluetooth itself was the perfect spam filter for Bitchat. And with a bit of creativity on the use cases then Bitchat could have totally scaled on Bluetooth alone.
I've no idea why there was a sudden need to "break out" of the Bluetooth comfort zone. Now we have all this spam naval-gazing.
Navel. Dammit.
"oh no i'm gunna buiiiillddddd!! aghh"...all over nostr
Adding nostr to bitchat was a mistake
Money is proof of work though
And how much money is required to post?
rate limiting + ip banning if they are spamming too much would be what I would do
It's like these problems already existed on IRC and have solutions π
Irc π€ kind1 nostr
