thanks for all the info! I think I'll just stick with water. keep it easy. sugar water and pennies with a 20m toddler running around seems an unnecessary risk.

I always put the penny below the stump anyway but yea, sounds like no real purpose.
Best of luck with the toddler around the tree. Maybe avoid glass ornaments...
