Sometimes being "bad" is preferable. It's the same reason I've got lenses from the 60s-80s for my modern mirrorless camera body. The imperfections are the point.
There's something about AI that's just too "uniform." When you manually edit something, there's clear, targeted intent on specific parts of the image, and the imperfections let the viewer see you in the work. When that's all smoothed out, it's like the meme has no soul.
