weird to call them a "pair" of "pants" (plural) - "put on my pants" "need a new pair of pants"
do people with one leg (or with an odd sense of style) say, "put on my pant" ... "need a new pant"
but then we say "pant legs" as if it's one thing with two legs
I need to move on

The used to be separate and tied to the belt at the waist. Men wore tights underneath and pulled on pant legs to protect the thinner tights from friction during labour or horseback riding, or to warm the legs in winter.
Sleeves were also often detached, tied to the bodice at the shoulder.

Beat me to it. So much of "fashion" was once function. Fashion history is quite fascinating.
I used to do a lot of historical costume sewing. I still do. But I also used to.
My mom has been a seamstress most of my life. I can do some things and I can follow a pattern but she is a friggin' wizard. Most of my clothes from childhood were one of a kind because she was like OG upcycler.
Yeah, a lot of my clothes are homemade. My daughter also sews, crochets, and knits her own clothes.
It does.
also, weirdly, I got no notifications about this entire thread but I appreciate this more than is probably normal
