Just asking for donations. Be straightforward. If it’s worth it enough for you to keep giving away, some people will find it worth enough to donate to and support. image

For some people it's hard to ask, I can't judge. 🤷 It's the reason why I tend to help people without being asked, because sometimes it breaks a piece of your soul to appear weak in front of others.
I can and do judge when I see people on here running servers and giving away software for free, and then posting publicly about how much they’re spending on it. It’s good to be charitable. But it’s also good to be forthright with others when something is becoming too much to support without support/donations/revenue, whatever the appropriate funding may be. I don’t care how much anyone spends on something nobody asked them to do. But if I like what you’re producing, then I’ll donate or even pay toward my use of it. People on here need to be up front about that instead of trying to make others feel sympathy for them for something they chose to do on their own.
“Damn guys, this is fun to run for everyone but it’s costing me a few thousand a year to maintain. Happy to accept any donations to keep that going if you use it.” How hard is it to just say that? 🤣🤣
Particularly if they’re a BTC OG. If you’re sitting on hundreds or thousands of BTC you owe it to the community to do the work and STFU about it. They’re pumping your own bags either way.
Your rational here isn’t accurate. Most people won’t pay. But you’re missing the point. If he’s a BTC OG it benefits him to keep promoting BTC which Nostr does. It doesn’t cost him anything, it pumps his bags.
It’s all good. This is just a topic that I have strong opinions about. Nostr needs more business endeavors. Good business is good for nostr. There can many approaches to monetizing (V4V, subscription, fee for service, donations, etc) but there needs to be a plan. Starting a hobby and then complaining how much it’s costing you to sustain it is bullshit. I’m a musician. Wanna know how much musicians spend on instruments, software, subscriptions, production, and so on? No. Most people don’t care, because it’s my choice that musicians chose to pay for all that. However, if someone likes your music, then they’re willing to support you financially and they understand there’s a cost in you creating something they love. Just be real about it and find ways to monetize. But nobody would care if I post “this studio time cost me $10K. I did it out of the kindness of my heart and don’t expect anything, but also I’m telling you because holy shit I spent a lot of money and I hope someone feels bad for me.” 😂
I didn’t say most people will pay, although they will if you only make it available for a fee/subscription. I’m aware that most won’t pay out of the goodness of their heart. I said some people who value it will pay, and beyond that some may even support with large amounts if it’s something they believe in. You just have to be explicit about the support you need. Most won’t care. Some will.
No. Ask outright for support or it doesn’t need to be said. It’s your choice to spend money on those things. Posting how much you pay for your servers without being asked to run them, and without asking people for donations, is bullshit. If you want support, ask for it.
If you’re trying to recoup your costs, donations can help and so can other ways of generating revenue. If that’s what you need, then do that. Otherwise you sound like a panhandler.
Thank you for telling me how to run my server. I'm going to continue to run it for free and from time to time remind people that it's free, but it costs money to run. I look forward to your next meme about value for value that explains this entire debate in pictures. If you don't see the irony here, I don't know how to explain it to you.
You’re missing what I’m saying. If you need people to donate to support it, just say that. That’s similar to how V4V works. If you don’t care whether people donate, then posting about how much you are spending is pointless and self serving. Feigning martyrdom.
I add a donate page to everything I make. I haven’t made a subscription service yet because I haven’t seen anything get a lot of traction yet. If something I make gets used enough then I would transition to paid or a freemium model of some sort.
Derek how dare you offer free stuff that others can use to build stuff... In Value4Value we use Time, Talent and Treasure. Each person has different amounts of each and some people can just foot the bill for stuff b/c they can. I get accused of this myself all the time. I built the site below for @The Doerfels and didn't even have any donation links for myself b/c I'd rather people support The Doerfels instead of myself b/c I want them to thrive and be able to put out great music from their home studio. I did add my PayPal to the site b/c TJ wanted me to and it is the right thing to do but some people are just conduits for the Value flow and don't care about receiving that much if any but its is cool to get support when it shows up. Anything I get goes right back out of my other pocket but I guess that's the V4V circular economy working. I'm also paying about $150 a month in different AI tools and services to build stuff because I can. Heres the site btw :) itdv.podtards.com
Posting invoices is the worst 🤣 If someone is providing a service and occasionally posts about costs and encourages people to support it if they like it or use it, I think that’s perfectly reasonable. The posting about how much it cost you to run things and explicitly saying you don’t ask for donations for it is totally self-serving and trying to make yourself look good in front of others. It’s bullshit. No need to brag about how gracious you are in front of people.
