Anyone working on open source firmware for cars? I don't trust any of the shit these car manufacturers are loading into their dashboards.
GrapheneOS motor vehicle edition?

Here what you do:
Buy an older car. They work just fine.
I worry that the regulatory environment in the automotive industry is going to make this very challenging. But I would love this too.
Would love to see a car based in NixOS.
pimp my ride style coming !
Great idea, I have heard something to this effect - will try to dig it up and send on to you…
this one doesn't need any firmware...For now, yes. In the future all cars will run an OS though.
Car OSs track your location in real time and manufacturers can shut down your car on demand. Normalizing this is part of the coming social credit system. We need open source car OSs.
More than necessary, smart cars bring so much more comfort and benefits but closed source basically enables the government and hackers to assassinate the driver on the press of a button.
Won't they be like Microsoft etc and stop all updates after a while though? A 15yr old EV is going to have old software that isn't going to get updates & we should have the right to repair/replace. But yeah, the gov't isn't going to let us.

Not exactly, but if you're willing to put in the work, this could do the trick.
With modern vehicles, ALL of the systems are integrated with the computer, not just the engine control.
There's a lot of work to be done to get important things like ABS and turn signals working.
Not to mention, climate control, and you can straight up forget about factory installed infotainment systems.
Additionally, all this is well outside of the law for vehicles that are driven on public roads in almost every country.
We've got some work to do if we want to retain individual autonomy in respect to transportation.
I think about this more than I think about the Roman Empire.
Listened to this one a couple of weeks back. Was quite an eye-opener.

Aftermarket Firmware without permission. Jailbreak firmware.
Sounds good. 🤙
Imagine not owning a 30 year old Toyota 4 runner and maintaining every part yourself

Not only you dashboard, you need to flash the ECU! My Honda 1999 is running on a flashed OBD1 ECU 🥸
Most of them are not FOSS but it gives you an idea what alternatives are out there

No, and it's not possible, or at least not plausible.
