Leaving likes behind has been the biggest shift in the way i use social media. The fact this doesnβt exist anywhere and i had to program it myself is crazy to me, but thats the power of nostr

Forced compliance is not American
I used the like button for the first time in a while yesterday. Felt gross π
Is there a way to turn off likes in Damus?
#onlyzaps mode in settings
But Damus still have likes
Its under zaps

But this only βhidesβ the likes. It doesnβt remove them. People can still βlikeβ I just donβt see it The idea is to eliminate likes.
Also, I use like 3 clients at the same time. It makes no difference to just hide likes on one of them.
I had it that way before and people lost their shit⦠they said it was taking away their freedom to like or something
Cool would be if replies by people who zapped the post that they were replying to had a little zap icon.
LOL I believe you, people donβt know what they need until someone tells them
Ser, i cannot be smiling if others aren't seeing it!
Likes are good expressions ....but they must have a value associated .. like 100 sats .. without value ...expression has no meaning ..
Is there no way for me to choose if a reader can like my note or not? Iβd like that option. Itβs not the client removing the option to like; itβs me - the user - deciding. Thatβs freedom.
yes, ironically #onlyzaps is miserly behaviour
I agree and was surprised most people didnβt agree
Nah, do it! Same as removing the headphone jack on the iPhone: huge uproar, then "these airpods are actually kinda okay", then silence.
good point
It was the dumbest move ever. Then galaxy followed.
Airpods are so uncomfortable.
I use a USB c to headphone adapter, lol
Airpods are probably my favourite apple device of all time. I actually forgot about cables until this post reminded me π
Good news is Nostr supports a zap-to-like adapter too. You do a zap with 1 Sat and put a heart emoji in as the zap message! I'll do one for you.
what does this mean
it just means don't be stingy with the love
you are restricting the readerβs freedom
what next, disable renoting, replies or quoting?
Nothing is being forced
My choice.
You donβt get to choose what other people can do though. I get the argument. Itβs not like you can stop people from liking anyway. Itβs the same as we have now with mutes instead of blocking
If the client itself disables likes then yes thatβs a restriction. But if a user decides to turn likes off or on for their own notes, surely thatβs their choice. The reader can still reply, zap, etc.
Zaps were indeed innovative. π I want to see more innovation.
I liked this note π«ΆπΌ
If you say so
Why even have words at all? Only zaps
Lol, I'd rather just use a Bluetooth speaker than airpods. They are the worst.
That's true, but I don't know why everything should be a zap. To me, a zap is only for something of note, high value, etc ...
The likes, boosts, laughs, whatever else are for low to medium value.
If nostr were zaps only, then the boosts, responses, replies, and all interactions would drop through the floor.
It would be if the zap button worked... (filed a beta feedback report)
Why not put a zap behind a like? That way you can β€οΈ or π and zap at the same time? It's useful to have a "reaction" + tip without needing to use words. Maybe have different zap amounts behind each emoji-like?
Apple says weβre not allowed to have the zap button on posts. We have a workaround:
Zap Zap Zap
Yeah its a good idea
this can only be done if you have auth and paid relays
#realy already doesn't send you shit that you muted, this seems like an elementary feature
not showing it to those you muted, that actually could be done too, it's the same thing (semisol doesn't think so but he is wrong) yes, i could easily extend it so if you mute someone your events don't get sent to users AUTHED to an npub you muted
all of it depends on authentication
why this is not grasped by the nostr establishment just shows how little brain they have
I'm 99% zaps, but still occasionally see a use for mere reactions. Like if you just want to acknowledge something and that's it.
I do have the button, using your workaround from long ago, but it doesn't do anything.

Oh wait it's not a button I guess. Maybe I have to do that again since I reinstalled.
Yes its not a button without the workaround
Alright, fixed. Next challenge: get Phoenix to support NWC so I don't have to use custodian for *sending* zaps. Receiving already works noncustodially.
Or maybe Zeus could do it? Having to manually confirm each zap with a wallet too much work.
Most Nostr clients only show likes (as in the heart) and for me there really is no difference between a like and low-value zap. How does a zap of 21 sats signal anything different than a like?
So to avoid duplication you'd need to either get rid of low-value zaps (put up a min threshold) or get rid of likes. And getting rid of likes feels cleaner.
Iβm with ya. Only zaps on Damus
Yeah i am going to add that (zap notification threshold)
The client is restricting what events I can publish based off of someone elseβs choice. The end.
to actually implement is a relay thing
The like button is dumb. Zapping is fun as helllll. Donβt understand why people donβt get this??
Yeah, I donβt pretend to know how it all works so itβs interesting to read the replies here. Difficult to achieve I am assuming due to a lot of it being relay dependent too. A NOSTR client should, IMO, mainly offer options/choice for the user and not limit or restrict, but then I guess itβs all within a NIP framework that is interpreted in different ways by different devs/people. Either way, Iβm just speaking from a user perspective. And I love seeing everything being debated and evolving.
Liking something does not mean I assessed it monetary value. I may give my employee a high five for something they said or did, that does mean i am going to give them a bonus for said words or act.
It's not that zaps are better or worse.
the best thing on Nostr is being able to emote any emoji you want rather than being forced into a weird like/don't like binary that just creates division and says nothing.
I'd rather see
π₯οΈβ€οΈπ¨βπ»ππποΈββοΈπ€ππ½π€§π₯Ά
than π or nothing
I think I'd agree with this if the like and zap buttons were not next to each other. For me though the fact that the zap button and the like button are directly next to each other means every like must be seen in context of the fact that it's not a zap.
Because of that placement, dropping a like is basically saying 'not worth a zap'. Because if it was worth a zap you'd have hit the zap button 1cm to the left. It's not like saying "I might zap later", or "I haven't considered zapping yet". So it's assigning a 1 Sat value in a way, it's just that the1 Sat is implicit.
I do get though that it's stress trying to work out the amount of a normal zap, cause you have to worry about setting precedents, under or over valuing, etc. More needs to be done to standardise zap values to bring down that kind of stress.
Yes, that's correct. Most notes are not worth a zap. Some are.

What about this for only zaps mode? Don't remove the like button, repurpose the like button as an instant zap button (same icon). And then make the regular zap button always show the choose amount slider. So it actually becomes a custom zap button. (Icon demo below.) The whole long press or short press thing on the zap button has always bothered me, this would fix it.
