You don’t have to enable OnlyZaps. Its optional. There are plenty of people on the network who still like likes. I find it bizarre to get upset at someone because they don’t want to receive likes 🤔 Maybe its a false perception that that person is doing it to get more zaps? Zaps are not a like replacement. Reposts and comments are.

If you smiled at me in real life, and then I gave you a blank look but kept walking.. (That is healthy for you? Especially if it happens often? Wouldn’t you just stop being nice?) A smile or 🤙 is just what it is. Wanting a stranger to interact with verbal or written dialog every time a stranger nods or whatever is a reach.
In meat space, friends do proof of work to demonstrate they actually are invested in the relationship and have each others back. In an infinite cyberspace, I want to know people I’m engaging with are real and actually value something with their limited resources. I send 50x the zaps I receive so it’s not at all about me making money.
any ideas around getting zaps to work in-app? or are you hoping wallets like zeus streamline it outside of damus
We’ve been conditioned by antiquated so called “platforms” but were the new protocol around these parts! #Nostr
You’ll take my 🤙 and like it! I’ve seen this debate like 100 times already. Likes are akin to a wave or a head nod to a passerby/stranger. In our context it’s like a “hey that’s cool, I agree or ‘like’ that thought” and let you know you’re not just speaking to the void. And for non-Bitcoiners, they can still participate. You only have 1 like to give. The more likes, the more you can tell there’s a consensus of thought. Zaps are nice because they can award creators of good content. Someone shouldn’t need to zap me to say “yeah I agree that it’s a good day”. I didn’t create anything except a GM post. But I can zap my own post 1m Sats and people could think that’s good content. It can be manipulated in some aspects Just my 2 Sats!
Damus has the look and feel of a traditional social media app, so people are viewing recent changes from that context. Traditional social media makes it easy for people to passively consume and engage with content. Without the option to like a post, people are forced to either comment or give up a valuable resource. It raises the barrier to engagement. Not sure whether it’s a good or bad thing. It probably depends on what your ultimate goal is for this platform.

This was my thinking too. It could improve conversations but at the cost of new users. I guess time will tell.
True! But also replying with 🤙🏻 works! More friction means better signal in this case. Look at it as proof of work! If I get no replies or zaps, I know I posted shit. That is fine. Likes are easy to mistake for a signal! 🐶🐾🫡
This was always bad before when the user didn’t have an ln address. Nothing is aligned really … should fix
Should be a like only if they don’t have a zap address configured 😝

I want a heart only option please. Thank you.
Interesting. I thought you were taking that in a different direction. I feel like I put my heart and mind into thoughtful note/post and then get some token “like” and nothing else. To me that’s like getting a blank face to my warm and genuine smile. On the internet you can get tens of thousands of “smiles and nods” whereas in real life I’m only going to see a few dozen faces a day. I need some value-for-value screening mechanism or I’ll be drained

If you typed me a message, especially if it was more than a word or two. Then I would respond in writing to your message.

Because often its not a person to person engagement. Like we are doing now. If I posted a picture of my dog. I would likely get some likes and possibly a comment or two of someone who wants to talk about the picture. Just as in real life if I was walking my dog at the park. Some smiles. Maybe a verbal engagement or two.
What's the difference between having only zaps and having likes/zaps merged into one? You can already set a custom zap amount. It's all about the icon, no?

they will stay if they find value in what they’re reading/viewing, not because they can “like” something.
I'm perfectly happy with likes. Zaps are the cherry on top, and the brightest moments here, but they will come on their own pace, no rush to force them.
Agreed. I think the Only Zap setting should be on the client rather than the profile, so for example if I want to zap only, the setting would only hide the like buttons on notes for me, not everyone on Damus or other clients who support this in the future. Seems to me that keeps everyone happy since it doesn’t “force” zap only on your followers.

I get your point, and I agree with you to a certain extent. But I think right now unlearning the meaning of a ‘like’ and rather focus on the content will improve discussions. I don’t think ‘likes’ are meaningless but I want to unlearn my focus on how many ‘likes’ I have on my posts, and rather focus on the content and discussions 🤙
I’m hesitating… Noun: a renote (it works) Verb: to renote (meh)
I agree that people should be able control their own information stream-I do think for new people, the etiquette on conversation engagement is not that clear on here and people may leave for that reason.
I like what you said here 👇 View quoted note → It’s all about positive incentives and let the people decide freely what they want to do and what features they want to use.
Bruh, what’s with the 20th century thinking? Don’t say you can’t afford it. Ask how you can afford it? Shit, here’s 100 sats. Do me proud.
