Sometimes we experience a moment of happiness without even realising it. Then our memory returns to those moments, and only then do we realise that we were happy. As an artist, this happens to me every time I finish a painting; at that moment, I feel that mixture of sadness and melancholy that makes me realise that, just a moment before, I was feeling happy. All those hours spent in front of the canvas, that silent dialogue with colours and shapes… all that time becomes a ‘happy world’ that exists only whilst you’re living it. Once it’s finished, you can’t go back to it, and perhaps it is precisely this impossibility of returning that gives the melancholy its weight and the happiness its confirmation.

Painting is my way of meditating.
