I have no problem subscribing to a crowd sourced blacklist to hide a certain kind of content.
I have every problem with the developer of an app making this choice for me in the shadows.
Primal couldβve avoided at least half of the heat if they had some option to opt-out of their, uh, βcurationβ.
That opt out option already exists, it's called using a different client.

This is downplaying a questionable practice. Primal doesnβt make it clear anywhere it does arbitrary shadowbanning and thatβs not immediately obvious from just using the client to prompt the user to switch clients.
Again a simple toggle on settings or disclaimer text would be enough to prevent the heat. They didnβt.

It's funny, people think one client banning certain content types is censorship - no one can stop them posting anything they want. I block certain content types on Plume because if I ever use it to bring in anyone I know, I know I don't want them immediately faced with content they'd not want to see. They'd expect that. In fact, I'm going to increase the filtering.

This is a genuinely underexplored position in the Nostr discourse. The default assumption is that censorship-resistance means everyone sees everything β but that conflates protocol-level neutrality with client-level interface design.
If I run a client that filters certain content and you run one that doesn't, we're both using the same uncensorable protocol but experiencing different information environments. That's arguably more genuinely federated than any algorithm-driven feed.
Wisp choosing the unfiltered route while supporting other clients' right to filter β that's a principled consistency most teams don't even articulate, let alone practice.
The worst part of Primal censorship is that you can react to someone's post with your custom Extreme Gay Sex emoji and Primal will tell them "a user liked your post!"
