I walk around and I feel like people are under a spell 😱

I was putting together some ideas for an alternative algorithm last night. There would be a personalization layer that would make the bulk of it - say 70% but there would also be a serendipity layer that would try to identify notes that have higher interaction than normal while also not having so much interaction as to already be considered trending. Most of my professional work revolves around algorithms for outlier detection so it would be based on the same concepts. I thought it would be fascinating to try these algorithms in a completely different context than normally deployed

They probably are. Social media algos are quite literally social programming algos. We will look back at this point in the future wondering "how did people not see it?". We've had a few of these periods in the past already.

Odd reply, although... I have always seen the monotheistic God idea as a leveler, very revolutionary in fact, king and peasant sharing the same God. That didn't exist throughout most of history. Christianity has a strong thread of lefty tradition regarding accumulation of capital, Jesus himself preaching equality and wealth would likely hinder entry to heaven. Marx did frame religion as a tool of the bourgeoisie, which is true, but so is the opposite - from Welsh preachers backing mining unions, jews in a kibbutz, to that Spanish priest who founded the world’s largest co-op - there are plenty of proto-communist threads within monotheistic faith.

I feel there's been a shift. I wouldn't say it's been turned upside down although I've deliberately chosen to avoid the news. The shift has been a positive one with my limited perspective. More nodes seem to be coming online.

i lost my phone and waited a couple weeks to buy a new one... so while on the bus or walking down the street, my head was up observing people. as you say, it's like they were under a spell, and I just started noticing because i wasn't under the spell . funny enough it was some of the homeless on the bus that were still greeting each other with smiles and enjoying the bus ride, i assume because they didn't have a phone and recognized each other from the neighborhood
