This morning, I woke up to a dozen messages from my friends with a link to nprofile1qqsvnx99ww0sfall7gpv2jtz4ftc9v6wevgdd7g4hh7awkpfvwlezugekhte2's post about the "NFT" token. Like everyone who wrote to me, I initially thought their accounts had been hacked. But no. The abbreviation "NFT" caused so much noise and hate that few people read beyond "NFT". "NFT from SimpleX" = a voucher to pay for servers. That is, there will be no NFT [ in the classical sense ] on CEX/DEX, no free trading and no pump/dump. You won't even be able to send this NFT to someone else. "NFT from SimpleX" is kind of like "recharging balance of your GSM provider". ---- Okay, moving on... You all know very well that I started using SimpleX a long time ago and personally made many of you install it. What do I think about this "NFT"? - I don't care. Can I anonymously buy an "NFT" from SimpleX to pay for using the standard server network? - Yes. Because I can always exchange XMR for USDT / USDC and then use stablecoin to buy a "voucher" to pay for SimpleX servers. Yes, you should understand that in order to maintain maximum privacy, you will need to create a disposable Metamask / Rabbi wallet, exchange XMR -> ETH (gas), and then XMR -> stablecoin, and then stablecoin -> SimpleX voucher. What percentage of normies do you think will be able to "do it right"? That's the main reason why I don't like these "vouchers", rather than the fact that I have to pay to use the standard SimpleX server network. ---- I always support FOSS projects with money (XMR or other crypto). FOSS projects need your support (bug reporting, etc.) and money to develop. If you think you can work for years on pure enthusiasm, I recommend reading the book "Real Artists Don't Starve". ---- If you don't want to mess with these vouchers, start your own server. SimpleX is completely FOSS, so no one can stop you from running your own server or even... a network of SimpleX servers in different countries/continents with XMR as a direct payment option, even with some % extra. image

yeah the wording and delivery is very off, but if they want vouchers they can also use something based off ecash/cashu and x-402 to restrict access, then a server provides a service for the "voucher", and ta-dah, no overcomplicating, but he keeps tapping on the "zkEVM" sign for some reason I'm not sure where he wants to get with this the main issue with this is how him, or "the team" will now have to diverge focus to build this, and then after the complexity is added everyone will have to carry that burden when wanting to fork, self-host, develop, use the app, etc. simplicity is always key, and at this rate SX will be forever a niche

The idea is: when SimpleX adds large groups and channels, 80% of traffic will be generated by 10-20% of the largest groups/channels. They (big groups and big channels) will pay. The rest will use it for free. SimpleX will simply charge large groups a small amount of money, which will be paid by the owners or members. nostr:nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqhnqkjdczyrpu2ey083zqawkxc8ytssgsncyhp0z0aqypwdr0njlqqsz0nw2ytxtkr50ynk6g9lv8cy9k7rxusrewxjvq5ndmhcp6h04ssqmgsqt5

there is usd based ecash too, see: https://github.com/MakePrisms/boardwalkcash-deprecated according to the gh link: > certificate issued to the user, based on the rules agreed with the software vendor. > certificate is used as a micro-payment for infrastructure resource (it cannot be transferred to any other user without risks of double spend). > certificate can only be voided by software vendor (or delegate who issued it), so it cannot be used directly as a payment. they are basically describing ecash, their whole use case is ecash, which is nothing more than issuing a certificate or web token for a payment, and it can be done using monero as payment too using an "NFT" for a voucher instead just makes it worse, less private, keeps it on the blockchain forever, requires another blockchain, which will definitely not have privacy by default, requires the purchase, usage, download of wallet software, of another token, has extremely worse ux, all that adds a lot more friction, all just to issue an online voucher... which is a solved problem already...

yeah it's the only docs I could find but the wallet itself is deprecated, just something I remember seeing someone building with ecash stablecoins everything built using EVM and NFTs sounds even worse to me, and much more complicated/bloated then a simple web token, and ecash can be issued with monero

If they will create the same server-model as Discord offering with privacy on top. it could work but it needs a really good UX and UI to even start to attract normie communities, right now it is very bad as a competitve platform. battery draining issues on mobile lack of multi client support and so on, it is only for privacy people at the moment. and that isn't enough to get their "voucher" system really kicking in as currently the only big communities are self hosting their own relays hackliberty for example. i vaguly remember Discord when it first started it was targeting the gaming space... i think at the end of the day the normie "paying" person will care more about UX and usability than E2EE or Metadata resistence thing. so they should start focusing on fixing what truly matters the foundational E2EE and no-identifier are already working, we will see

Yeah some people were flipping out who didn't even bother to read the announcement. NFT is non transferable, token is a utility token like a prepaid phone card. However I'm assuming people will speculate on the token anyways because they will just see simple x token and smash buy without any research into what they are buying... Was this the best way to do this? Probably not but it also doesn't mean they are doing a cash grab scamcoin either.
