image > Dozens of small internet forums have blocked British users or shut down as new online safety laws come into effect, with one comparing the new regime to a British version of China’s “great firewall”. Several smaller community-led sites have stopped operating or restricted services, blaming new illegal harms duties enforced by Ofcom from Monday. They range from a hamster owners’ forum, a local group for residents of the Oxfordshire town of Charlbury, and a large cycling forum. The hosts of the lemmy.zip forum, hosted in Finland, blocked users from the UK accessing the site, saying the measures “pave the way for a UK-controlled version of the ‘great firewall’”. https://archive.ph/eRu0m

Realistically how does nostr help this (let's pretend nostr already had forum clients). It's the legislation / fear of punishment that is the reason these small uk-based forums are closing and non-uk communities are playing it safe by blocking UK users. #asknostr 🤔

Like those CCTV disclaimers.. for your safety you're being recorded. Yeah.... sure. I feel so safe now.
I will cheer threefold when the detestable petty dictator Starmer and his equally detestable henchthems are dangling from ropes as punishment for their crimes and usurpation of powers.

I don't understand this. If the servers are in another jurisdiction than the UK, how can they possibly make the forum admins block British users? Why can't they just ignore it? And why is this happening? This is a perfect use case for nostr though.

It appears this is for domestic British usere.
First they came for the hamster forums... I still don't know what the penalty is for non-uk sites... Do we bomb them? It's vital my Fedi instances run as they're the only place online you can guarantee Phil Collins emojis working. Nostr depends on the client. :80s: For all I know most people just see :80s: and not :80s: Still more uptime than X. #Facts
We need to onboard the online hamstr community 💯. The name works as a -str so well 🐹

Let's say tomorrow the British state Eye of Sauron turns to nostr. What actually happens? They would probably set their target as #Damus and #Amethyst I imagine, certainly as a priority (and let's just say that this is the case). How does this scenario play out? Two devs who are public figures threatened with legal action and insane fines. (I'm not sure what actually happens / is being threatened, what is realistically enforceable by Interpol or whatever... that's another question really, if anyone knows...) #asknostr @jb55 @Vitor Pamplona
