They did say this about twitter in the early days. Facebook network effect would never allow twitter to grow…
However, if nostr is seen as just a twitter clone, that will be the case. It will always be in the shadow.
Nostr has to focus on what sets it apart. Then people will run to it.

I think nostr is more resiliant to the infighting found on the fediverse. However I think good old fashion network effects will keep people on Twitter, even through this rate limiting nonsense.
Either way I find these alternative spaces more exciting so here I am.

NOSTR has no rate limit. That’s a good start to set it apart 😉

This….
Real and true
Different clients focusing on different use cases offering unique experiences would be great.
Once nostr becomes many things and they all work concurrently in harmony… then people will begin to “get it”.
“I only need 1 account for the entire internet?”
Still believe people will end up with multiple npubs and use them for different things. Some you might be willing to attach your KYC info to for real world services, burner type accounts for grey markets, pseudonyms for different forums etc.
Account switching will get easier and help drive this adoption
The ability to cultivate and maintain a community across platforms is what will ultimately be the value proposition for Nostr. And it seems that the devs understand and promote the protocol over platforms.
I’ve always been curious about this and maybe you’d be more likely to (or able to) give a more transparent answer on here; what happened at Twitter? Did it grow too big and unwieldy, resulting in you and your employees doing their best to moderate, or did government influence become too strong? I never thought you were a bad dude, especially after the chats on joe Rogan, but it’s never been clear how Twitter ended up where it did
Many things. But being a public company that’s smaller than all of its peers and entirely dependent on brand advertising revenue played a large part. And there’s much I wasn’t paying enough attention to. My focus was on growing it after a significant decline. We did that.
Well it led you here. And this is the solution and future we all know the world needs. So you didn't do that bad in the end. 🤙⚡️
😘
@jack you’re so amazing, you do so much for the world 💋
Thanks for the honest reply, very much appreciated 🙏🏻
I’d say the marketing team is doing a swell job tonight.
More people means more scrutiny .. more government .. more of every bad thing that happened to facebook as well as twitter .. why grow more and old quickly ? .. Is it advertising dollars ? if yes than there is no difference between Nostr and Twitter but I thought this new technology runs on water :-) . there is no cost ,, no corporations ,, no server ,, no data-centre ,, obviously , I was hallucinating
Has anyone listed out how Nostr is different from Twitter?
(Apart from the decentralisation of clients)
Do you think that delaying the IPO could have saved twitter?
We're already starting to see the emergence of this with clients focused on a reddit-like experience and another with a messenger-like experience.
nostr should go after website comments, even a comment layer for sites without them
Nostr's most popular use case right now is a Twitter alternative, though it's a Twitter alternative on steroids, because that's what we needed in the present. In the coming months and years, as the "Other Stuff" expands, we'll start to see the masses see Nostr as more than just "social media" but as a much larger social and communication ecosystem. We just have to wait for users to dream it and developers to build it.
I'd like to see Nostr's next big push move into areas that need Nostr the most such as a Reddit alternative. This will showcase Nostr as both Twitter like social and community like social. Thankfully, this vision is already underway with NIP-172. 🤙🏻

Soon we will have Reddit on Steroids.
Nostreddit FTW
Network effects ^ use cases
Every new use case improves the network effects of all other use cases
What I love about nostr is how easy it is to integrate into websites. At
@The Nostr Report we pull notes from relays, and the json format makes it easy to manipulate the data to suit our needs.
I also have
https://nostrsites.com, where you can have a webpage of your nostr content, but your actual content remains decentralized.
I believe nostr is going to change the entire internet
💯 agreed. Jack be nimble! sure would be quick to jump nostr to the next yardstick.
I can't wait for this. Nearly every damn subreddit is moving to Lemmy.
I hope nostr isn’t to late and everyone is already on Lemmy or somewhere else.
Does NIP stand for Nostr improvement proposal?
The problem with Lemmy (and likewise Mastodon, being based on ActivityPub) is that everyone's data is still siloed and subject to being deleted at the whim of the person running the instance.
The fact it's a protocol is what sets it apart. It'll rise above and beyond a Twitter clone.
The speed of what people can build on Nostr is big tech on steroids. Zaps, nests, shops, discovery, blogs were all added in the last few months. And every new thing only reinforces what was built before that.
Similar to Lightning, every new addition to the network helps all others on the network. Every new implementation possibility on Nostr helps all the others before it.
Not too nice not to be able to delete your own posts. Why do you think this is valuable?
I’m a volunteer for the RFK Jr. campaign and it seems my Twitter account has been hobbled. My tweets do not show up in the tweet panel - only in replies…
