Do also make a fresh cut. You don't need to cut much, but especially if you're not cutting it at the farm before coming home, you want some open capillaries to draw up water. Also, if you ask me, Frasier Fir is the best. Spruces work but are spikey!

thanks for all the info! I think I'll just stick with water. keep it easy. sugar water and pennies with a 20m toddler running around seems an unnecessary risk.

I always put the penny below the stump anyway but yea, sounds like no real purpose. Best of luck with the toddler around the tree. Maybe avoid glass ornaments...
