The devices yes, but iirc, the nodes are often on towers which often have generators, and the AM signals can broadcast for hundreds of miles. I have not done substantial research on the subject tho so I could be wrong.

Yea it just shows they have no understanding of how bitcoin works. Really you don’t even need a smartphone, just a signed transaction and some means of getting it to a node for broadcasting.
