Does it matter if they have 99% of the market? Apple and Google are both locking down the hardware so you can’t replace the OS. With Google you still have options like LineageOS but that might change soon. Android isn’t really open source. So what choices are left? Would be nice to have iPhone-like hardware quality paired with a boot loader that lets the user choose between various free OS‘s that have compatibility with Android APKs. That would require a translation layer.

Well, the real problem is hardware, not software. In this fiat world, hardware needs to become "obsolete" in fewer and fewer months to keep the big players alive, and this doesn't leave enough time for FOSS devs. The hardware simply disappears.

Android is open source, it’s literally in the name (AOSP-Android Open Source Project). As long as you can unlock the bootloader, you can flash whatever you want. The problem is relocking it, unless you have a custom AVB key, you can’t and I believe only pixels can be relocked with a modified boot image/OS, and nobody wants to limit themselves to one brand. The problem is Google got rid of the dedicated recovery partition and moved it to the boot image which makes flashing on the go damn near impossible because you have to be tethered and use fastboot commands. Graphene does have OTAs, but, fuck that noise. Not to mention all of the big names that used to bring up the new OS’(mainly Alex Cruz and team DU and Martin Coulon from GZR) are retired or passed on and no one else knows how to do it so they just copy/paste whatever is available, which usually leads to issues because they have no clue WTF they’re doing. Is Kdragon still around? I have been #teamapple for a few years now, it’s the best decision I have ever made. Sure, there are some cons but, at least for me, the pros far outweigh them. I suppose you could jailbreak it but that defeats the purpose of buying an iPhone.

Well...it's the best option that we have right now compared to other phones..linux or regular devices. Would love to hear if you have any other good suggestion.

i don't, because none exisit. mediatek soc's are just absolute garbage, man. i've reviewed and demoed many of those devices over the years. they just cannot compete twith snapdragon soc's and for me, i'd rather have a device in my pocket that i can actually use as a daily driver.

Since I can’t drive, I always pick socs that I can use as daily walkers. For example, I’m about to walk to the store in these twin Dickies socs I got in a multipack several years ago. They combine warmth and breathability, and don’t need to constantly be pulled up. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

I feel like if the human rights foundation @gladstein were to ever make something to advance human rights, a profit neutral smart phone to undercut the big players and be FOSS all the way would be the most potent move they could make

Defnitly we have to find a way to complete a totally free mobile os. So free software can be ensured by the community instead of the reliance of these big companies, that stand with autocrats, when their profits leads them to do so...

It is defnitly something that would greatly benefit all activists around the world. Maby we also have to invest more time motivating our non-technical friends to try more foss software. I would really like to find a project, where people bring together the best arguments, why independence and privacy matters. So we privacy advocates get a good argumentation bases to deliver personalized arguments to friends and family.

I think it depends on the AI and what sources it uses. I look at reviews sometimes. There it seemed to have big batterylife issues. Like not being close of lasting a full day. When this gets better I will defnitly make the switch one day to a linux phone.
