Make sure you've got relays set up. Also, if you don't have any follows, you won't see anything in your follows feed. Different clients expose this in different ways, so I can't be more specific.

There have been a lot of shenanigans in the background these days but idk about that. Make sure you're on quality relays and using a decent client.

I don't know what is your definition of dead but if you go to 
it should give you a good idea of the scale of activity on nostr. As far as I can tell Nostr is basically just a few thousand people.
