The devs behind nitter received a cease and desist from X. nitter is open source software that allows people to see posts on X without an account, without JavaScript, basically in private. If nostr wasn't so Bitcoin maxi focused, it would be a good place for people disillusioned by X to come to.
Instead, Bitcoin maximalists like @fiatjaf have made sure nostr is mostly a place for Bitcoin maximalists, with tons of native features designed just for Bitcoin, with niche Bitcoin features only diehard maxis care about and will use.
Bitcoin maxis are great at fucking up good ideas.

Why are you tagging me out of all people? This is so weird. I'm the least "Bitcoin maximalist" type in here. My client doesn't even have zaps or any "wallet" functionality.
Do you have any concrete suggestions for what could be done to attract Nitter users and related people?
I assumed from your involvement in the creation of nostr (and your past hilariously absurd comments about Monero) that you had more involvement in maxi things like
NIP 47 is a blatant Bitcoin maxi catered feature, clearly sucking up developer time and effort. Time and effort that could instead be spent on ways to make nostr a better place for general content literally the entire rest of the world would be interested in. For example ideas like this that went nowhere:
I'm using Amethyst and it's so easy to find all these niche Bitcoin features all over the app that are integrated into the nostr ecosystem. But it's difficult to find interesting content outside of the Bitcoin maxipad bubble. That is a result of conscious collective decision making to cater nostr features to Bitcoin maxis.

Here I'll tag @Vitor Pamplona as well, who apparently is more invovled in creating this state of things I see from my perspective. @Vitor Pamplona why is it so difficult to put a Monero address in my profile, but so dead obvious how to connect a Cashu wallet that clearly has a deep integration in your app? Related, why are you focused so much on Bitcoin maxi features, as opposed to a client that is more intuitive for the general user? Your app could be so attractive to people outside the Bitcoin maxi ecosystem.
Here's a concrete suggestion for you!
Don't be a fucking dickhead in discussions like this and actually help move them along:
Why is that PR sitting there still? Why be a hostile fucking dickhead on the PR?

Cashu is just Btc credit, like lightning but worse.
It's not actually bitcoin
I'm not sure you know what you're talking about, but you are probably right.
Ya, and it gets first class treatment in the nostr ecosystem because Bitcoin maxis are dogmatic morons who like to drive good ideas to the ground
Turns out I assumed correctly. Bitcoin centric features are first class citizens in the nostr ecosystem. And you help foster that climate with hostile rhetoric to non maxi contributors like you did in this PR:
If you like seeing nostr remain the niche echo chamber for Bitcoin maxis that it very obviously is, keep doing what you're doing.

The non-Bitcoin crypto stuff harms Nostr as much as the Bitcoin stuff, don't you think?
No, I don't think that. I do think nostr gets a lot of value and credit from enabling people to send value to each other. That's a compelling and attractive use case. Zaps are cool and seems like they played a role in attracting a solid user base here.
I also think that user base has an obvious ceiling and that there are plenty of users out there who would be interested in it if it wasn't so tunnel vision focused on niche Bitcoin maxi features.
The protocol is a viable alternative to Twitter. But if you continue to keep the focus so narrow on maxi dogma, then it's not going to reach its potential.
I haven't used nostr in 3 years. I reopened it hoping it wouldn't still be the maxi circle jerk festival it was back then. Yet here we are. It's really not surprising at all things haven't changed much given dogmatic Bitcoin maxis like you are running this ecosystem.
I am fine coding whatever you need. I just have not received any contributions from Monero users yet.
Nostr being crypto agnostic is less off-putting to normies than being lightning only.
It's more about how it's sold.
These are just internet play tokens, like sending gifts in tiktok.
Except you don't have the platform middleman, you can send these tokens to an exchange and trade them for other tokens or money with relatively low fees.
Instead of tiktok taking a 70% cut of the value that people paid to buy the gifts to send to you.
That's how normies should be introduced to it.
Ok how about: when a user goes to the "Wallet" page in the menu, and taps the "+", how about supporting adding a Monero address that way? It could reuse the Payment tag people use today. But this way it's actually intuitive how to add a Monero address in the app and it's not tucked away in an extremely unclear place.
I apologize for being rude to you above. I think you're friendly.
Which protocol should we use to manage the wallet? None of our wallets are ours, we are just calling other apps or services. The UI is the easy part. Do Montero wallets have something like Nostr Wallet Connect?
I don't see why you need all wallets in that page to implement that protocol. For Monero, adding the wallet to the app could be as simple as just displaying the address and linking the URI in user's profiles.
Besides, Nostr Wallet Connect is kind of exactly what I'm talking about is the issue with Nostr development. Just from a glance, it's obviously designed with Lightning and only Lightning in mind. That's a Bitcoin maxi way of thinking that's contributing to a Bitcoin maxi hivemind around here. A more general protocol that could function for other cryptos (not just XMR, but gasp including USDC and USDT) would help foster more diverse content in the nostr ecosystem.
Sure, but we need protocols for each one of them. We used to have just simple addresses for Bitcoin as well and nobody ever used them because it is too disconnected of an experience. Zaps and NWC were the things that made Bitcoin explode on nostr. Just addresses would have never reached the level that it reached with btc. We actually tried.
You can't have an explosion in usage without any investment in the protocol to make things exciting for users. It won't just magically be used if all you do is to just list the address in the profile page.
OK, I hear you. Monero and other cryptos could use a well thought out protocol that integrates well with nostr the way zaps and NWC do. There haven't been people around to do that. Most people involved with nostr development know more about Bitcoin.
I wonder if that has anything to do with the active hostility toward "shitcoins" by maxis like fiatjaf on NIPs PR's bringing in features for other cryptos. But I digress.
I think better support for displaying the URI in a profile would be nice until contributors arrive.
Maybe if there is legit openness to contributions like "how to do zaps or NWC with Monero", I will consider contributing.
Backing up to this: re-opening the app after 3 years I'm not sure how best to find interesting content. I imagine there are probably good algos out there featuring good nostr content. Is it still a general policy to avoid algos? I think I remember that being a thing. But I also think amethyst could help out in some capacity pointing me toward content I'd be interested in beyond just laboriously finding people to follow.

Sure, the nostr ecosystems doesn't *have* to be such cunts toward things not Bitcoin-centric, and have boners for everything Bitcoin-centeic either. Yet here we are and this is the result. I'm pointing out a reality that this ecosystem has constructed. Other open source ecosystems have succeeded at their goals. Nostr is succeeding primarily for Bitcoin maximalists. If that's your goal, great! Have fun staying niche.
It helps to cut down the following you have that keep up nothing but EBSC and other coin talk; I have spikes (including now) where I’m such, but far more often than not I also talk about other shit (albeit, politics primarily).
You just have to filter down (or out) the noise and curate the experience you want to have; @7fqx has a good few follow lists that do such a thing as a starting point.
The problem is that it's hard to actually curate the experience and takes a lot of work / navigating the client.
I'm using Amethyst. I want to try out Imwald soon.
But in Amethyst for example, I have no idea how to see @7fqx 's follow lists. Nothing populates in the UI when I tap their lists. Idk if I'm doing something wrong or looking in the wrong place.
I've recently found "feed algorithms" in this app which are kind of interesting when they load, but the UX is pretty painful digging through to figure it out. Loading screens that just sit, sometimes never functioning with unclear messages.
And my main point was that clearly a lot of development time has gone into features like Cashu NWC. It's the center button on the bottom bar of the app. Rather than features that actually would make this a pleasant experience for non maxis.
I feel bad picking on Amethyst because the creator seems like a genuine nice person. I hope this can be taken as constructive feedback because I really do like nostr's bones and there really is so much potential with it (and with this app).
My earlier reply will help you out somewhat in regards to finding (hopefully) more intuitive clients that don’t push the “send money” aspects heavily.
